A pneumatic gas booster is a reciprocating, pressure-balanced positive displacement device. It uses compressed air acting on a large-diameter drive piston to actuate a smaller-diameter boost plunger, producing pressure amplification proportional to the piston area ratio (Pout = Pdrive × (Adrive/Aplunger)). Output is pulsed via ball check valves, and units automatically stall at pressure equilibrium without energy consumption.

Working Principle Description

  1. Compression Stroke (Down)
    Reversing spool routes drive air to the upper drive chamber, pushing the differential piston assembly downward. Inlet check valve (7) remains closed; when chamber pressure exceeds outlet line pressure, outlet check valve (11) opens, discharging high-pressure gas in discrete pulses (flow is not continuous; downstream accumulators are used to smooth pulsations in industrial systems).
  2. End-of-Stroke Reversal
    When piston reaches bottom dead center, it mechanically actuates the pilot reversing spool, switching drive air flow to the lower chamber. All check valves momentarily close during transition.
  3. Refill Stroke (Up)
    Drive air enters lower chamber, pushing piston upward. Drive exhaust valve (4) opens to vent upper chamber drive air to atmosphere. Outlet check valve (11) closes to prevent backflow; when chamber pressure drops below inlet supply pressure, inlet check valve (7) opens, refilling the high pressure chamber via pressure differential (not vacuum suction).
  4. Automatic Stall Capability
    When outlet pressure reaches the maximum pressure ratio limit, forces on the differential piston balance, and the unit stops automatically at end of stroke, maintaining pressure without power consumption or air consumption. It resumes cycling automatically when outlet pressure drops.
